Bivak Zandhoek
Description
Bivouac Zandhoek is located in Opoeteren, a borough of Maaseik, adjacent to the Duinengordel, a unique natural core in the heart of the Limburg Kempen region on the Kempen Plateau. The land dunes in the area have an exceptional relief due to their extensive length and height. The nature reserve lies on the territory of the municipalities of Meeuwen-Gruitrode, Opglabbeek, Maaseik and Bree.
It comprises 3 extensive hiking areas: Oudsberg (located in the Gruitroder forest), Donderslag and Solterheide.
Central to the area is the Flemish nature reserve Oudsberg: the highest and largest open drift dune in Flanders.
The Duinengordel also contains cycling and riding routes for tourists and recreationists. (see also http://www.duinengordel.be/ ).
